The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is an ongoing construction project consisting of a series of bridges and tunnels crossing the Lingdingyang Canal linking Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai, three major Pearl River Delta cities in China. The 50-mile or 31-mile link is budgeted at $ 15.6 billion. With its length, it will be one of the major landmarks of world engineering. The largest section will be 29.6 kilometers long and will include three cableway extensions between 280 and 460 meters or 920 and 1,510 feet.
Construction began on December 15, 2009. The last tower of the bridge was erected on June 2, 2016. The last stratified element of the immersed tunnel of 4860 meters long was installed on July 12, 2016. Initially planned to be Open to traffic in December 2017. In 1982, rapid growth and demand for cross-border traffic led to an agreement between the Hong Kong governments and the Shenzhen authorities. This agreement has suggested an improvement in connections by opening up new road links. Continuous expansion work was carried out at existing intersections to meet the growing demand for passenger handling capacity.
In order to provide long-term relief for traffic congestion, several projects were approved and approved. The Hong Kong Government and China\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s competent authorities have identified the need to open new border crossings. At the third meeting of the China / Hong Kong Conference on Coordination of Major Infrastructure Projects, it was agreed to conduct a joint study on the link between Hong Kong and Pearl River West. An important study was completed by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Hong Kong Government on the transport link between Hong Kong and the western bank of the Pearl River Delta.
The study points out that a bridge will link Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao with significant macroeconomic benefits for the Pearl River Delta Region, including Hong Kong. It was considered three alignments that connect the two banks of the Pearl River. The result of the study is that the Hong Kong (Lantau) -Zhuhai-Macao bridge proposed by the HKSAR Government, a link between the three locations under one country, two systems, is the most urgent and has important political implications and economic implications.
The study points out that the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge will change the current passive condition of the transport link between Hong Kong and Pearl River West, which is mainly based on water transportation. It will shorten the distance from Hong Kong to Macao and Zhuhai from 160 to 30 kilometers or 99miles to 19 miles, and reduce travel time to within half an hour. As a result, Pearl River West will be within the 3 hour transportation network that radiates from Hong Kong as its center.
