There is some rock at the Burj Khalifa site, but it is fragile and saturated with ground water making it incapable of withstanding a lot of weight. So, large boreholes were dug 164 feet - 50 m, deep and then filled with viscous polymer slurry to maintain the stability of the hole. The slurry is denser than water, but lighter than concrete. 

The concrete, when poured into the hole, displaces the slurry and hardens to form a foundation pile. The DUBAI Mall cost $ 20 billion and has 1,200 stores, hotels, 22 Stadium multiplex cinemas, a food court with 220 fast food outlets and 120 restaurants, a skating rink - Dubai Ice Rink and one of the largest aquariums in the world with more than 33,000 marine animals on display - Dubai Aquarium and Discovery Center.

The Dubai Mall is a 1.1 million square foot shopping mall built on the bank of a 30 acre artificial lake. The Mall is a unique blend of upscale retail stores and luxury leisure facilities. The extension will increase the annual capacity of the malls to more than 100 million visitors, the expansion project will employ more than 5,000 workers and is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2020.
